More About Beagles

September 27, 2007

Speaking about my beagle, Jesse, I thought I would add a couple facts about beagles for anyone considering getting one as a pet. Their average height 13 to 16 inches and average weight is about 20 to 25 pounds. The beagle is a very friendly, sociable dog that loves children (and almost everyone he meets in fact). Top on his list of favorite things is to get a good scent and follow it wherever it goes – not even food can top this!! Very good at entertaining themselves – just leave them out in the backyard for a while (please have a good long run or a fence or you will be looking for him for hours! and if you do end up looking for him a booda bone might entice him back [maybe!!} and make sure you have a dog leash for when you DO catch him) and see how many holes he digs!!! My dog even plays ball by himself – throwing a tennis ball up in the air and catching it. Provide them with plenty of dog toys or they will steal your daughter’s stuffed animals and happily chew them up!!

My Beagle, Jesse James

I have a crazy Beagle named Jesse James. One of his favorite things to do is play tug of war with his dog leash. He especially loves it when my kids chase him around — zoom zoom he goes up and down the stairs like a madman! Does anyone else out there have an insane beagle you would like to share stories with — maybe some training tips???

Our pets are living longer and healthier lives these days because of the many new advances and treatments that have been developed over the years for our pets — however, they are prone to develop problems simply because they are older (just as is true with people).

Some of the problems you may notice could include some of the following: eye problems such as dry eye (which means decreased tear production), cataracts, and glaucoma;  if your dog no longer comes when called (assuming he used to!) or if he is easily startled could mean hearing loss problems (maybe hand signals would help); if your pet suddenly stops wanting to eat it could mean some kind of problem with his teeth or gums; you might also want to cut back on the amount of water given to the animal at nite if he seems reluctant or unwilling to go on as many walks as he used to.

Pet health insurance could help you avoid an expensive operation or even worse have to make the decision as to whether or not you can afford something required to keep your pet healthy and happy, especially as many new treatments have become available in the past few years.

What would make good pet lover gifts for traveling? Well of course you need good, reliable dog leashes (an extra one in case you lose one!). Another good idea would be a secure harness (basically a seatbelt for a dog) and a portable, foldable, easy to carry pet home. If you have a bike, consider getting your pet a biker jacket — he (or she) willl be the hit of bike week!! Visit us at www.bestanimallovers.com for these and many other fine products.
